Razorcake Podcast #196

Goddamn, this Marvelous Darlings LP is a much needed reminder of how fun music can be. To reiterate, keep a watchful eye on corporate interests in punk rock, keep an eye out for homophobic/racist/sexist/classist discrimination within the scene, don't let anyone get away with acting like a rock star, squash the bullshit whenever possible, but also whenever you can; get your hands on records like this and let the melodies warm your soul. Punk is supposed to be an outlet, not a let down.

And like Skillz says, “if hip hop died, you're responsible for it.”

Metal was the first non-mainstream genre of music I got into. In middle school I had some older friends that got me into metal (Christian metal, at that! Don't ask—it's a long story). Eventually, I found my way into hardcore and punk and, in the process, realized there were a lot of quality (non-Christian) independent metal bands, too. Metal still holds a special place in my heart due to its ability to express the rage and aggression I often feel, even though I'm way past my teen years. (It never really goes away. You just learn to live with it.)

So I present to you some of my favorite independent metal songs (plus Slayer, because, well, they're Slayer.) Hope you hear something you like!

Interview Podcast with the Gateway District

The Gateway District is an excellent band. Yup, that about sums up my demographic research, my Gallup Poll, my “how many friends do they have?” I like them. They're getting stronger and stronger. Their second full-length, Perfect's Gonna Fail was one of the sleepers of 2011 for me. It never strayed far from the record player. It's got some marathon legs. That's some quiet Midwestern confidence for you. They avoid slickness and focus on songs with timely deliveries.

They're from Minneapolis and surrounding environs. Two strong ladies—Maren and Carrie—handle the singing and play guitar and bass, respectively. Brad, a man who put all of his worldly possessions in a boat and sailed down the Mississippi, is their drummer. Their guitarist is one hell of a contemporary author. (Nate Gangelhoff couldn't make the West Coast shows. Dave Strait's no tour slouch, by any stretch.)

Gateway District has been lumped into pop punk, but I disagree. This is punk that's agreeable to listen to without losing any sort of emotional or sonic edge.

We over at Razorcake like the Gateway District so much that they made the cover of our 10 Year Anniversary issue (http://www.razorcake.org/store/razorcake-65). Since they were able to make the trip out to Razorcake HQ, we did our best to record the interview. I don't know about you, but I like it when people you respect are given the opportunity to talk for themselves instead of it being chopped up.

Here you go. An interview with the Gateway District. If you've never heard them before, the podcast starts off with one of their songs.

Razorcake Podcast #193

I'm so not living in a commercial for lifestyle beverages, expensive consumer electronics, or casual, quirky hipness. Several weeks back, I wanted to get some exercise before finishing up an issue of Razorcake, to clear my mind a bit before jumping into a layout. So I shoveled some mulch that's sitting in the driveway. My back went completely out. It was the first time that'd ever happened. I took a shower, sat down, worked. By noon, I couldn't stand up straight. I choked on my burrito. By night time, I laid down and couldn't stand back up. It took me ten minutes to get to the bathroom. I'm looking at a month of physical therapy.

How is this relevant?

I have nothing to gain from sharing this music—all DIY, mostly punk—besides the fact that I think it's great and I hope more people get tuned into it. And when thoughts of, “Fuck, man, I just really want to not piss on myself right now” come to the front, stuff like a band's popularity or what other people think about the minutiae just goes right out the window.

What do you listen to when there's no one else around?

SLOW DEATH, THE: Born Ugly Got Worse: LP

Premature death's a funny thing, especially if it's exaggerated. So, Pretty Boy Thorson And The Falling Angels didn't actually die. A couple of them went off into relationship cocoons that transformed into butterflies that flew back to Minneapolis. But in that pupal stage of becoming pretty in other states, Jesse Thorson was busy gettin' himself a little lady, took up a deep interest in ducks and tractors, and formed a new band. “So, Todd ‘you still make that little zine?' Taylor, what you're saying is that Jesse Thorson is now in two bands?” No. He's in four. “Well, what's the difference?” Does it really matter? Actually. A bit. Flip the cards over one after another: Jesse dances in this band since he isn't tethered by a guitar. Saw him throw up twice in one day—two sets five or six hours apart. Meat. Potatoes. Homemade pizza. Your drugs are mine. Midwest. Bad decisions as rusted crowns. Large bellies as fulcrum points to not passing out. Happy misery. Miserable happiness. Now, debuting ‘lil happiness. Long drives on questionable tires. Mikey Erg. Harpoons of self-doubt. Paddy Costello. Johnny Cellphone. DaveStrait. Super. Group. Of dudes. Cock Sparrer as American, country-fringed, and snow-tough. Or Johnny Cougar playing Defiance songs. And really great enunciation. This isn't a diss: this record's like an invisible electric dog fence. I've been hearing Jesse sing these songs for years—you can see the well-worn tracks in the lawn—but it's always a pleasure to watch him catch those frisbees, bring them back, then pee on your leg for your time. Guess what? Excellent record. PS: I'm offering ten dollars for anyone to send me a copy of Jesse's emo zine that he's Stalined. –Todd (Kiss Of Death)

TENEMENT: “Taking Everything” b/w “Daylight World”: 7”EP

Tenement know how to make songs and they know how to get weird. It's this balance between catchy-noise-pop power and “What the fuck? I like this” that's rising Tenement's balloon up through the layers of “eh, shrug, clinical pop punk,” up through “you just discovered that effects pedal app on your computer garage rock,” up to heights of well-known bands that get referenced easily and readily. But if the stained, threadbare, inside out Hüsker Dü T-shirt fits—and the band sounds like an airplane crashing in one song and casually walking away from the wreckage the next—I'm all ears. As of this record, any and all Tenement is worth your time. –Todd (Toxic Pop, toxicpoprecords.com)

NIGHTMARE BOYZZZ: “Say What You Mean” b/w “Backyard Coffins”: 7”

What is it with the DIY South lately? True Stereo has me self-doubting that I actually have missed out on some good ‘70s stoner rock and Nightmare Boyzzz have me appreciating a band that appreciates The Beach Boys. There's definitely a lot more mixed in; this 7” is both sunshine and the little bits of dust that look like gold as they flit from shadow to light. Or the curling smoke of a stubbed-out cigarette in an ashtray made from a flipped-over, old piston. In no hurry, almost casual. Repurposed and serving a new purpose. A very listenable two songer. –Todd (Arkam)

AMOEBAS: Self-titled: 12”EP

One of the supreme difficulties of being a record reviewer is having seen these waves roll in before in sets. It's far from the first time you've surveyed these waves, seen the gales, know how it'll break, where the kooks'll cluster. You're not as in a hurry to suit up and run into the ocean when the yellow flag with the black dot in the middle is flappin'. So, in attempts to not become Ye Olde Jaded Fucke, I took my New Beach Alliance time with Amoebas. I took my paperback out, sat on the sand, took naps, got an unexpected sunburn with crisp lines as the Amoebas played over the public announcement speaker. All this metaphor is to say that there's a definite line in the sand between bands worth listening to and bands that are just, “Blah, whatever.” The Amoebas are a Michigan band that enjoys the Stitches and the Carbonas in equal measure. It took a few spins to figure, “Yep. They know how to structure a song and how to ride a wave, instead of sneer and expect people to clap at their limited abilities and obscure vinyl collection.” Good stuff. –Todd (Modern Action / Gimme)

MEAN JEANS / HOLLYWOOD: Split: 7”

Mean Jeans: Continually remind me of kids at school who did everything to look like they didn't give a fuck, didn't pay attention, clowned all the time, but, in reality, were some of the smartest people in the room. Although they'd never admit it when anybody else was around. So if they're painted by others with the Keystone Kops, Bug Bunny, Ramones tri-colored brush, that's fine, but that's just the brightly lit side of the portrait. Another great song because being this dumb and this catchy is much harder than it looks, even if you're sitting in the front row. Hollywood: Perhaps “I Prefer Drugs” isn't the best introduction to them. It could go either way. It could go in a Midnight Evils direction with balls so big that their scrotes have calluses on ‘em. It could go in a, “Wow, that schtick became a noose” direction of Nashville Pussy. Too small of a dose to make a prognosis. Cover features the weird-lookin' dude from The Room. –Todd (Big Neck)

YOUNG GOVERNOR: Where It's Quiet: 10” EP

I'm glad fifteen-year-old me isn't listening to this me because, the fifteen-year-old me was a punk fascist. Since it's Young Governor (cover of Razorcake #63), I'm going to let this record settle long after this review is written. Here's why. Havana 3 AM. The Brigade. Any music video put out by a one-time punk band that featured people who looked like they were extras in Beyond Thunderdome, but were heavy on the fluorescents and feathers. The hair metal, Joe Wood TSOL. There is a time in almost every band and musicians' arc where you, as a fan, have to seriously decide stuff like: “Am I willing to follow them… to this? Am I ready for post-________ (fill in the blank) adult if I keep listening? I hate electric-sounding-clicky-tambourine-y things and synthesizers.” Some bands proved absolutely worthless beyond lawsuits, copyright infringement, and fan confusion. (The TSOL debacle.) It's partially prickly because what we ask and expect of musicians can often be contradictory: “Don't change too much. That's scary. Don't release the same record again and again. That's boring.” So, as the fifteen-year-old me has already snapped this record over his knee and is attempting to light the now-toothy vinyl on fire, the thirty-nine-year-old me is just hoping that the electro poppy “Dancing with a Friend” is not Ben's final direction. Because we all know that the first several Clash records are the monuments and Big Audio Dynamite is the shadow. Harsh. And some times you gotta get other stuff out of your system. Really like the three other songs, for sure. –Todd (12XU, 12xu.net)

PINE HILL HAINTS, THE: Welcome to the Midnight Opry: LP

PINE HILL HAINTS, THE: The Evening Star: LP

The future and past are filled with ghosts. Ghosts of memory. Ghosts of potential. The Pine Hill Haints somehow interconnect and harvest those two ghosts like sheets made out of smoke. To call them “old timey” music is a disservice because, although they play traditional music amplified, there's no fuzzy mittens of nostalgia in their music, no regression to a time that exists as mere fable. One of the largest issues I have with new music is the motherfucking robots—with their bloodless computer brains, microchips, software, social programming digitized—making it. The Haints have the ability to continually remind me that all music's worth listening to is based on the human heart. The valves. The pumping. The thrum in your ears. The pulse at the wrist. The thud, thud, thud, that it you listen to it closely, that if you listen to it for long periods of time, you can swear that you see a simple beat twining above you into this thing called a soul. In my book, music that does that is rare. Welcome to the Midnight Opry is a full-length of new songs. The Evening Star is a collection of previously released songs and it's nice to have them all in the same basket. –Todd (Opry, K, krecs.com / Evening Star, Black Owl Radio)

SPITS: THE: Self-titled – but I'm calling it Five: CD

Well, I think it's time to say it. The Spits are—whatever generation this is—Ramones. They simultaneously make the same record over and over again. But that's a fuckin' lie. Because there's always some new mutation radioactively lurking from under the bed or zip-zap lightning bolting from an airborne creature's eye with each self-titled record. They've taken back the alleys. They're now in the water supply and spray painting dongs on the top of Mt.Shasta. Like mold culture spreading, changing colors, and sprouting hair on the forgotten last slice of pizza rattling around in the box, the Spits have harnessed the power of readymades-made-dangerous. All you—as the listener—have to do is decide to chomp on down instead of throwing The Spits away like an empty box. Pupils dilate. Motor skills slacken. Craving for glue increases. Durable punk for these weird-ass times. Who knew The Spits would have such legs, be so prolific, be some of the last men on earth? Great radiation-mutant rock. –Todd (In The Red, intheredrecords.com)

MAXINES, THE: Self-titled: 7”EP

Remember the first time you huffed glue with paint? That fuzzy oval of silver around your mouth and nose from the bag? Before the severe brain damage? Yeah. Good times in the garage. That's where the Maxines come in with their hollow-body-sounding, ragged-crunchy, fuzzed-out, Cramped-up-funfest. Billy Childish and Hasil Adkins nod and twitch and milkshake and Hunch in approval. Gritty Patsy Cline twists out a cigarette with the heel of her shoe and dudes are biting their palms. Two piece. Featuring Matt Murillo of the Jewws (Razorcake #11) and a lady who graduated college and didn't get all loadie on aerosols. Put out by the folks who were at the tip of the Tranzmitors rocket. Top that. Nice. –Todd (La-Ti-Da, info@latidatrecords.com, latidarecords.com)

WAXAHATCHEE: American Weekend: CD

The roadie was super-nice to a lady bug and a bumble bee. It was the day before Halloween, so we were some of the few dressed up. He showed us which cords went where in the back of the amps that Replay Dave had so generously donated for the show. I'd never met Katie Cruchfield before, so I made a point to say hello before the show. Say thank you. We quickly peeled back the layers of blankets that can be between two active DIY punks in America. Lauren Measure had made the initial connection and suggestion Katie play. “That's right! I love that Bad Banana 7”… Do you know Bradley, Beef Cat from ‘Bama?... Mitch Clem was loco about PS Eliot.” Katie played first as the sun shone brightly through the pane glass windows behind her and sheeted off the beer-stained wooden floors. Just a striking voice, a guitar, and words. The bar was filled and pretty much silent. Rapt, not slack-jawed. And as a grown man dressed as a lady bumble bee who had just secured fluorescent yellow zip ties to his glasses so his antennae would stop slipping down, she floored me. The simple, bare ache. The unadorned, obvious talent. The sadness. The resolve. The durability of a style of music that's been so molested by hacks over the years can still be directed straight to the middle, straight to the heart. This is a stark, melancholic, beautiful record, one I felt privileged to hear live. Right after the set, a fan knocked his beer all over their merchandise table while thanking them. –Todd (Don Giovanni)

Long drives on questionable </itunes:summary>

Interview Podcast with The Street Eaters

The Street Eaters are a two-piece, wife-and-husband band from Berkeley, California. They play loud, weird, hooky DIY punk. It's arty enough to be exploring and punk enough to get to the point; they're a refreshing balance/counterbalance of quick charges and expansive sonic landscapes.

You may know Megan March from Neverending Party, Younger Lovers, and Wild Assumptions. You may know John Geek from Fleshies, Triclops! or Harbinger. Or you may not know any of those bands. Just rest comfortably knowing that two long-time DIY music makers are putting out exciting music, that they tour relentlessly, and they're very approachable, down-to-earth folks who have very tight bond to both one another and the music that they make together.

Megan and John were interviewed at the Razorcake HQ in Highland Park. A full interview went into Razorcake's 10 Year Anniversary issue, #65.

It's available here: http://www.razorcake.org/store/razorcake-65

Below is an excerpt from the interview that did not make the print version: talk about being tortured in a film, who'd they'd nominate as America's Crass, and their favorite DIY punks who wear their glasses live.

As an extra-special bonus, you can listen to the interview in its entirety here:

Todd: So, John, how did you end up in the role of Apples in the movie Neptune?

John: Oh my god. Have you seen it?

Todd: I only saw previews of it. I never saw the movie.

Megan: It's brutal.

John: It's about an hour and a half of just relentless brutality. That was involved with a bunch of people from the Spam and Geek Fest collective, directed by Anthony Marchitiello. Really interesting guy. Interesting film. A post-apocalyptic survival thing. Doesn't really get explicit about what happened. He focused on a small group of individuals. It's more about human-as-animal kind of things. My character was probably the most sympathetic character in it, trying to be the most human, whereas everybody else was… I mean, he dies. Brutally. About half way through the movie because he's trying to be more human than animal, but everybody else is kind of being an animal.

Megan: It's hard not to feel sorry for a character that gets shoved down a huge ravine naked.

John: Oh yeah. That. And then dunked in a freezing creek shortly after having his face burned in a campfire. This was all live, too. There was no CGI fakery. Just pain.

Megan: Did you get sticks and splinters stuck in painful places?

John: I don't even want to talk about it. It's an interesting film. Hopefully, one day, it'll actually see some sort of a broader release, at least DVD. He's done a bunch of shorts. The film has got some sound issues, so we may have to Foley it some day, but who knows.

Todd: John, you mentioned the fourth wall. What's that?

John: You mean the separation between the performer and audience?

Todd: Yeah, but I don't know what the first three walls are.

John: Well, that's around you, on the stage. Unless you want to go through the back of the stage.

Megan: Is this a Pink Floyd reference?

Todd: [serious robot voice] No.

[laughter]

John: You're supposed to pretend—besides the stage walls and the stage separators—that there's another curtain between you and the audience that you're supposed to be separate from. I guess that's what most people in the performing arts and thespian arts do. But most of the good punk bands and rock bands…

Megan: We hate that wall.

John: It's to be despised.

Todd: I didn't know if it was a political term. Because there's the fifth column. I didn't know if there was a fourth wall.

John: Where did you pull it from, because maybe I was double-meaning it?

Todd: Every time I've seen you with the Fleshies, there's no fourth wall.

John: We try to smash it. We try to do it as much as possible, too, although we are a little more bound by instruments.

Todd: And you can really tonk people with your guitar.

John: I don't want to hurt anybody.

Todd: That thing can slash.

Megan: You've gotten close, man.

John: I know. I've got to be careful. Being sober is a good way to avoid people with that.

Megan: I think we were also really encouraging of having the audience break down that wall, too, because we try and get people to be closer to us and more involved when we play. When people are standing closer and their faces are in dangerous places, of getting hit by drum sticks, I find that more exciting. I think they're excited, too.

John: Excitedly bleeding.

Megan: Excitedly dangerous.

Todd: I was talking to Tim Kerr (Big Boys, Poison 13), and this was before Biscuit died, and he said, “You know what, I don't think the Big Boys can ever come back and do a reunion because we won't have the audience we were playing for at that time.” He was the first person I heard say that. It's absolutely true. It's also very honest to realize that you may only have four members, but it really has five hundred people. The people who are in the same mind space and giving you energy and helping you out. Even on tour, all the people who helped you out or did things. That's part of the band.

Megan: And they can be strangers, too.

Todd: Absolutely.

Megan: And I want to meet them and hang out.

John: Getting back to that fourth wall thing. Why would performers be above everybody else? There's no point. Everybody's involved. We've been shitworkers as much as we have been performers in our lives in and around music. We like it all. It's all part of the same culture.

Todd: Another topic: Top rocker that wears glasses while performing? And I ask this question because I know John wears glasses, but never on stage.

John: I mean, Todd Congelliere (Toys That Kill) wears them sometimes on stage, doesn't he? Or does he usually take them off?

Megan: He does! And he's got the headband…

John: Yeah he's always got the headband…

Megan: And the sweat.

John: Yeah, you're right.

Todd: He's there for business.

Megan: ADD/C, they all wear glasses...

Megan: And they're all forces of nature.

John: And, wild asses. Daniel like with the [sound effect] flying, going nuts. I don't know he keeps ‘em on his head.

Todd: Because my gift to people who rock out with glasses, I sometimes carry little racquetball straps you put on the back of your glasses because, especially the sweaty…[ makes sound] whew, right off.

John: I think I've seen Colin from Defect Defect wear them.

Todd: Yep, exactly.

Megan: Oh, he totally does. He's got the little strings in the back.

John: Yeah, he's bouncing around like a damn beach ball.

Todd: And his glasses are always fucked up, too.

Megan: I've noticed that.

Todd: I'm trying to get you guys out of your comfort zone.

John: Yeah, no that's good. Making us use these brain cells…

Megan: Think about it, think about it.

Todd: Who do you think America's Crass is?

John: There are some brilliant bands around right now who are very evocative of Crass and do an excellent job of it, both lyrically and musically. The first one that popped to mind is, obviously, Surrender.

Megan: I'm a big fan of Surrender.

John: Enormous.

Megan: I wish there were more American Crass bands. There aren't that many peace punk bands. Surrender's the one I can really think of that is unabashedly political about their lyrics—dramatic, very intense—and very staccato and rhythmic musically. But they're definitely doing their own thing, too. Because we did see a Crass cover band when we played in Worcester. We played in a converted firehouse when we were on tour with Shellshag and there was a Crass cover band, which was amazing. Loved it. Maybe there can't be an American Crass band. The only ones that there can be are cover bands.

John: Also, Crass was such a specific product of its time and place. But I love the idea of peace punk. We really need more peace because we just keep declaring wars. And there needs to be people saying no, whether they're a voice in the wilderness or a few hundred thousand voices in the wilderness. It's still a voice. Okay, sure, shouting at the sun doesn't necessarily change anything, but if you get enough people shouting at the sun, then at least some are providing shade.

Megan: But also ignoring something that you're against doesn't make it right. It's okay to have an opinion.

Todd: My personal balance is being aware of it and having it not drive me into a hole of depression. Understanding that, “Okay, this is as far as I can take it.” Because there is no shortage of horrible, horrible things that are happening on a continual basis. And I think that people get addicted to that, in and of itself. So, yeah, it's a balance. Awareness and activity and very important.

Megan: That's a great reason to make art about something, to get it outside of yourself.

Todd: Externalize it. Get the toxins out.

John: It does reach people, too. If you're outward enough with what you're doing and, really, are trying to get it around as much as you can—like you do, and like we do from touring all the time—you do reach new people. There are people at the shows; you're not always preaching to the converted.

Todd: I think that's a fallacy.

John: I think it's a complete fallacy. There are a lot of people who are not aware of some of the things that you're saying and maybe they're open to listening and you're open to what they have to say about it. But sometimes they just might not have much of an opinion on it at all. This is a weird example, but in swing states or places like that where you play, sometimes it's also people who you think are converted but they are just so separated from the issues and doing any direct action to deal with them that they end up totally disenfranchising themselves. “You know, you're actually in a state where your vote actually means something.”

Megan: Take Florida.

John: Two hundred people are going to decide some election. It may be between one tool and a complete tool, but that gives you, still, power, whether you back a third party that would help to pressure the lesser tool into being, perhaps, slightly less of a tool.

Megan: But also in the context of the punk scene, “the converted,” I think there's a lot of issues which are silenced and we have songs about domestic violence and women's reproductive rights, which, to me, are songs about human rights and civil rights. And to be able to sing about those things has produced some really powerful conversations afterwards. People being like, “Wow. You wrote a song about that? I'm afraid to talk my best friend about that.”

Todd: The ADD/C dudes came up with this, too: “The best thing you can do is to become an example.” Day in and day out. They cited Mike Pack. You could say, “He's just a guy who records bands.” Not really. It's much more than that. It's daily conversations. It's actually putting things out in the world instead of just thinking about them. Very important.

John: He's definitely a do-er.

Megan: And he's a guy who is able to do something amazing like that and consider himself still punk and have a family.

John: And, at the end of the day, we can crash at his house and watch Gilligan's Island.

Megan: ‘Til four o'clock in the morning.

John: Which sounds awesome to me right now… or any time, really.

I guess that's what most people in the performing a</itunes:summary>

After reading, one of the best skills I picked up in school was typing. I'm a fast typist.

Every Friday of in my typing class in junior high, we were given instructions to make some art. Twenty-five spaces. Three dashes. Return carriage. Twenty-four spaces. Period. Four spaces. Period. Return carriage.

If you did it right, kept the lines in order, found those characters you rarely used on the keys, and didn't get trigger happy with the return carriage, you'd get a cool design.

In the past two months, I listened to some kickass records that were new to me. I'm also having an on-going love affair with Rocket From The Crypt, so they kick it off with their now out of print Scream, Dracula, Scream, which is much better than Scream, Blackula, Scream. The best thing about that movie is the title.

Keep listening to great music, otherwise the people with dumb haircuts win.

RED DONS: “Forced Turning Point” b/w “Se Foi”: 7”

There is a small hand of punk bands that are unmistakably down that, I'm sure, would have a very wide appeal among people who “used to like punk” or “outgrew punk,” as well as, “Oooh, what's this punk stuff about?” people. I'm not talking about the Rancid/Green Day axis of mainstream appeal. I'm talking the potential Fugazi levels of sustainability—large level, international underground level. Because the Red Dons are instantly catchy, smart-as-all-hell, musically interesting, and so big and realized in sound, that I'm hard-pressed to think of a band with a largesse of morals that equals the excitement of the music they're currently making. For those who like: punk and/or punk and celebrating under that huge fuckin' umbrella. Untouchable and worth hunting down? Absolutely. –Todd (Taken By Surprise)

NIGHT BIRDS: The Other Side of Darkness: LP

Hardcore that really resonates with me has been made by outcasts. And I don't mean one-dimensional, “They don't understand my crew,” looking-for-sponsorship outcasts. I'm talking about people who truly don't look or fit the part making fast, hard, palpitating music. I'm talking about misfits within misfits, even at the band level, yet they're all on the same page at the same time, if even just for the length of a record, the duration of a set. They're all in the same chemistry lab, comic book store, record store, and thrift store for that twenty or so minutes. They draw from obscurity and edges and fringes. Look at old Dead Kennedys, Zero Boys, and Void photos. Look at Out Cold. Regular haircuts. Regular T-shirts. Regular-looking. Not funny-looking. Then listen. It's what's trapped inside that's worth listening to for the long haul. They saved all the weirdness and anger and head ventilation for the music. Night Birds run deep—obvious over—and undercurrents are the surf guitar, the breakneck speed, and the smart lyrics. Inside is melody and Woody Allen references, origami-like guitar leads (fancy cuts, intricate patterns), and a drum that jounces and hollers instead of getting locked like a monkey inside the 4/4 cage. They're looking at hardcore punk laterally—approaching it from the side—and that sounds so much better than a band you can hear flooring it in a straight line through a suburban cul-de-sac with nowhere else to go. Excellent. –Todd (Grave Mistake)

TURKISH TECHNO: Past Due: LP

I don't want to sound racist… totally fucking with you. Ever notice that when people say that, the next fuckin' thing out of their mouths is racist? Turkish Techno finally release a full-length LP. The secret decoder ring to Turkish Techno is realizing that they're coming from the earliest reaches of the Lookout! catalog and they celebrate almost all of it ‘til right around to The Oranges Band and when the Donnas had a tens-of-thousands-of-dollars-per-video budget. (Dude, I thought Andy was kidding me that Tilt didn't start out with Cinder singing every song. That first 7” is a trip.) Turkish Techno is itchy and spazzy with pop punk as the infrastructure, but it's Riverside'd up. It's an unfinished offramp to an abandoned suburb style of punk. It's desperation as palpable as the smog that gets backed up at the foothills of the San Bernardinos. They've made a house of music worth squatting in. It's a bit abrasive, a bit Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes Propagandhi with a whole bunch of “fuck yous” and “stupids” thrown in. It's like waking up in a hotel room with the middle cushion of the couch totally missing, the sticky half of an Oreo stuck on the wall, and… wait for it… someone having tracked in human shit over the carpet, barefoot. And no clues as to how any of that happened. Bad ideas, yeah, Turkish Techno's got ‘em. And they wear ‘em like official-looking badges. And you gotta laugh along, because, if you don't, you'll start crying. –Todd (Wolf Dog / Muy Autentico / Dirt Cult)

BRAIN F≠: Sleep Rough: LP

You can say that I'm totally high and I'm listening to a completely different band than what's actually playing on this record. I'm fine with that. Brain F≠ (pronounced “Brain Flannel” (no idea how the “not equal to” sign becomes “lannel”)) come across as a bunch of hardcore folks who channel the following: Sweet JAP, The Saints, The Detroit Cobras, and Taschen. They embrace the stomp and go, barking and wailing, “If you fall off the back, it's your own damn problem” pacing of Sweet JAP. They bury the sweet and mysterious hookiness of the Saints (albeit completely aggravated and breathless, like the most frenetic tinfoil-in-caves-vertigo moments of (I'm) Stranded). The lady from the Detroit Cobras has a fuckin' awesome voice, but she's adamant that the Detroit Cobras are definitely not a punk band. Elise Anderson has an awesome voice and this is unabashedly a punk band. To tie it all up, there's art at work here that I don't fully understand, but I don't think they're mocking their audience and the graphics look nice, so that's cool. I rarely make comments about mastering and levels and whatnot because I don't know dick about that stuff—but this record's amazing in the fact that the two vocalists are nice and clear in the mix among the buzzing ricochets of blasting instruments. I'm sure they're murder on live PAs. Exciting. –Todd (Grave Mistake, gravemistakerecords.com / Sorry State, brainflannel@gmail.com)

DEFECT DEFECT / DAYLIGHT ROBBERY / FOREIGN OBJECTS: 3-way split: 1-sided LP

It's a three-band show that'd totally rule. Three contemporary punk bands on three different channels, but all on the same wavelength, if that makes any sense. Defect Defect: Colin couldn't be clearer. He's calling out all punks who got “too old” and have “given in.” I can almost see his crooked glasses slipping off his face as he sings this. Black Flag? Absolutely. Damaged, not TheProcess of Weeding Out. Lines drawn. Tough love. Napalmed babies. I'm down. Daylight Robbery: Sounds like their records come with a spool of police tape that raps around your stereo as it plays. It cordons off a crime scene, sets the place in noir-ish blacks and whites, expands to ten times its original volume, and carefully inspects and detects. Think X, Los Angeles, not Hey Zeus! Foreign Objects: I blame professional wrestling. When I did a podcast with Bill Pinkel and he played the Foreign Objects, I was like, “Oh, there was an LA band called that.” No, no there wasn't. It was Legal Weapon. The professional wrestling opposite of a Foreign Object. Although the guitar plays “Just Another Damn Song” by Bad Brains, this is totally Legal Weapon-y, Death of Innocence, not Squeeze Me like an Anaconda. Summation: Oh, hell yeah, I hear echoes of bands before. But it's the best echoes, not the questionable ones (that loved the Grateful Dead and hair metal). Run that correct shit up a pole. Great stuff. –Todd (Dirt Cult)

SURRENDER / 1981: Split: 7”EP

Two bands channeling their inner-Crass: the unmistakable, unapologetic, spelled-out politics. The skree-and-garroting guitars. The crows on white snow and red blood feel of a corpse-strewn battlefield. The talk-singing, the strangulated small animal vocals, military-style chants. La Cañada's Surrender belt out the epic “Crucified” and a pretty rough-sounding, low-vocal, live-in-Seattle track, “Praise to Capital.” And since Crass was such a collective and its nine members oscillated in their communal duties, one could make the argument that Finland's 1981 is the other side of coin of Surrender. Musically, they could be the same band and they deliver two strong tracks, including the “Emma Goldman could definitely dance to this” track, “Silence.” Good split. –Todd (Stonehenge, €5 postpaid, stonehengerecords.com)

SOKEA PISTE: Oire: 7”EP

Modern Finnish hardcore. By that, I mean they know their punk roots and they've updated to the black ice, ice-pick, hard-scraping, atmospheric, moody/melodic hardcore ushered in by From Ashes Rise (Alkaen Tuhka Nousta) and His Hero Is Gone, yet has a distinctly European feel, along the lines of El Banda. Paranoid neutrality. Mistrust. I think that language and history are sometimes important in understanding music, so here goes. The land area that now makes up Finland was settled immediately after the Ice Age, but it wasn't until 120 years ago, in 1892, that Finland adopted its own national language. Before 1892, Fins mostly spoke Swedish. (Russia was trying to woo Finland away from Sweden and figured if the Fins had their own national identity, they'd be easier isolate and conquer.) That backfired. During the Second World War, Finland fought twice against the Soviet Union, and lost both times. Finland remained an independent democracy but was forced to stay neutral through the Cold War, until 1991. Finnish has always sounded and looked impenetrable to me as a language. The band's name is “Blind Spot.” The 7”'s title is “Symptom.” Scandinavia doesn't get much sun in the winter. And it makes sense now that Sokea Piste's punk band legacy is Lama (“depression”), Riistetyt (“exploited”), Rattus (I'm assuming a play on “rats”), and the out-of-place-name-wise Terveet Kädet (“healthy hands”). A cold blast of ice-filled air from the north. Sounds like snow plows scraping near-empty parking lots sheeted with ice. Recommended. –Todd (Peterwalkee, peterwalkeerocords.com)

PEGS, THE: Nobody's Listening Anyway: 7”EP

“Bad life decisions” punk. No matter where music tastes take me, I need my monthly dosage of intravenous, fucked-tooth, pants-uncomfortably-tight, no-thinking, probably-bleeding-somewhere—maybe internally, Orange County degenerate punk to cleanse the palate and watch the bad tattoos spread across my skin like happy magic. If you've heard the Stitches mixed with the Crowd, you've heard the Pegs. If you like Hostage Records, you've heard the Pegs. And that's not a bad thing and this is a good 7”. I mean, for fuck's sake, when you go to a restaurant, go for the shit you'll most likely like, right? Not some fucked-up fusion with capers and fennel and indie pop sticking out the side like a flaccid dong about to poke you in the eye. Don't tell me I'm alone on this. –Todd (Rapid Pulse / No Front Teeth, nofrontteeth.net)

SHIT CREEK: Scene Cred Is Our Name: 7”EP

SHIT CREEK: Lust for Brains: 7”EP

Ben Snakepit's singing voice sounds like a long, disorganized beard with food bits in it. And that's not a dig. Brandon Dude Jams—I can't be the first to say this—is really channeling his inner Ryan Young of Off With Their Heads both in with “We're all fucked! You're fucked! I'm the most fucked! Fucked! Whoah oh! Sing with me!” lyrics and the sounds his mouth makes when he sings. On the uptick, for sure, is the song “Guitarded,” which chronicles the Brazilian mahogany from the forest to the factory to Ben's incapable hands playing it, to the awkward position it puts him in. If you don't read the lyrics and just discount the music as “Bearded dudes with hygiene issues music,” you could make the argument that it sounds like bears wrestling... but you'd still be a douche. Shit Creek also call out hobopunx because, when you strip it down, they're just base consumers, too. Knowing Ben and having met Brandon, Shit Creek is also a vessel that confronts “midlife” punk. I wouldn't say “crisis” quite yet, but since punk is often hard on the body, the early thirties is when your “body rental” starts becoming “body ownership” and it's time for some reevaluation. Shit Creek do that in song. To wrap it all up, what's that word I'm thinking of? It's a young shoot or twig of a plant, especially one cut for grafting or rooting? Or a descendant of a notable family? Shit Creek are really mad at that word. And, as a favor to me, please name your first LP, Up. –Todd (Cred: Dirt Cult / Lust: ADD)

VARIOUS ARTISTS: 12th and G, Chino, CA: LP

One yardstick to hold up a comp of a super-down DIY place (1919 Hemphill, 924 Gilman) is looking at the listing on both sides. (This doesn't work as well digitally. I'm looking at you, interwebs.) But don't treat them as sides of a record. Treat them as two shows. Would I go to side A's show? Side B's? And even if you don't know all the bands, are you in good hands? Do places make friends? No—12th and G was just a leaky warehouse with a skate ramp, a fridge, and a PA—but the people inside those places can. Friendly, honest, fun-loving, down-for-the-cause people. Not hypothetical circumstances, not a fantasy football version of punk rock or a corporation rock version of punk. This is rent-to-pay-is-not-an-excuse-to-be-a-douche-to-bands punk rock. And the comp. reflects the guiding principles of 12th and G. well. It's unmistakably DIY punk at its core, but it's unafraid to lend high fives to bands who also dip into metal, hip hop, and the mellower fare. The strongest testament to this comp is that it's a direct, honest reflection of music that's being made in America today; of music that came through their doors, to music that they helped nurture by providing a genuinely great place to play. Due to cops on the interwebs (again, fucked by digital) being bummed that the city of Chino wasn't getting their graft and kickbacks—and under the guise of “protecting the children”—the warehouse was shut down in April, 2011. This comp is a love letter. I intentionally didn't mention one single band in this review because it's bigger than just one band. It's a matter of trust, like when Donna Ramone or Horror Tim or Marty Ploy or Christina Zamora say, “Dude, just listen to this band.” You put time aside in your busy schedule and just listen to some really good shit. –Todd (On The Real, ontherealrecords.tumblr.com)

STEVE ADAMYK: Desecrate: 7”EP

Powerpop. The equation's ass-simple. Be catchy as hell. Get every instrument bouncing and punchy. After the first listen, hum that shit in the shower. Hum that shit when eating your morning bowl of cereal. Hum that shit when your boss lashes your back. Hum that shit to the cashier at the supermarket. Go home, take your shoes off, and slide across your floor in your underpants humming that shit. It's much easier to do poorly than pull off correctly. Think Tranzmitors. Think candy knife fights. Think style, but not slavery… to that style. Think Go! Ottawa! Go! Steve Adamyk! Nice. –Todd (Taken By Surprise)

CHEETO CHAMP: Gets the Giggles: 7-song CD

One of my hot buttons in music is preciousness. I have no patience for “watching people make a sweater made out of musical notes instead of yarn” music. And although Cheeto Champ play their music with an undeniable sweetness and vulnerability, they more than balance it out by some furious pedaling, plenty of crunch, and well-placed “i!i!i!”s. Sweet is balanced with the sour. The sour balanced with salty and spicy. Cheeto Champ is the Takis Fuego of punk. Or cactus punk: able to thrive in harsh and barren environments, outward spines against intruders, solemn beauty. Adrian is one of the singers of God Equals Genocide. In Cheeto Champ, she pulls a vast majority of the lead vocal duties, and with that longer exposure, she really sounds like Iceland's Björk Guðmundsdóttir of the Sugarcubes, circa Life's too Good. Only took me five or six years to realize that.Comes inside an impressive letter press cover and stamped CD artwork. I like this a lot. –Todd (Lauren, Lauren-records.com / Bite The Cactus, bitethecactus@gmail.com)

JOHN WESLEY COLEMAN III / FOLLOWED BY STATIC: Split: LP

An Italian release that acts like 7”EPs on a split LP. John Wesley Coleman III's EP Personality Pancake: It's melodic and it's freaking out. Around the corners and in its heartbeat, I hear Hasil Adkins and Bob Log III. A full-band one-man-band? Appreciated outsiders with insuppressible “yips” and “yops!” all laid down on a shaky bed of howling, hollow bodies, throbbing embers, and a roiling ocean of reverb. Somehow relaxing and high pressured at the same time. Followed By Static's Bacon Bear: Sitting on its haunches, ready to strike with cobra strikes of reverb and skronking trumpet. They do a nice job of sounding both languid and paranoid. It's a funny coincidence that one guy in this band's first name is Jeffery and another guy's is Pierce, because the band sounds like the ghosts of Jeffrey Lee Pierce's Gun Club hangs in their closet next to their collared shirts. They sweat that same sorta sweat. Both bands. Nice. –Todd (Way Out There, wayoutthererecords@gmail.com, wayouththererecords.blogspot.com)

BERTOS, THE: San Diego: CDEP

Don't quote me on the title. Mike from The Bertos handed this to me at AwesomeFest 5. The cover's written in sharpie on burrito paper. There's a lot to like about the Bertos; the fact that lead singer Mike's almost bashful when they're not playing just adds to it. They play songs about manual labor jobs and quickly and haphazardly moving out of an apartment. Real stuff that may sound small—“…and we dust and we mop…(ba bah bah) and we fold everything…(whoah oh oh)”—but, to me, just sound real and honest. They also have a subtle way of twisting things with a flick of the wrist—“…and the night falls… (ba bah bah) we're out drinking (whoah oh oh) … and we are so afraid…” Think along the lines of J.Church, (another power trio) Hüsker Dü, and deconstructed and reassembled Tiltwheel guitar riffs. What that boils down to me is plenty of space to breathe inside of the songs. It's like watching a set of lungs expand and contract over and over again. Seeing the blood pulsate. The esophagus swell, breath expel. The Bertos are a well-kept San Diego secret. Give ‘em a chance. I have the feeling they'll surprise you. This gets better and bigger with each spin. –Todd (Self-released, no address)

Welcome to my fourth podcast for Razorcake. This time around I sat down with Daryl “No Synths!” Gussin in a battle of the “most boring voices in punk rock.”

Has anyone ever asked you “What's your favorite record of all time?” and have you ever been able to answer that question? I can't and haven't.

That question seems to be for the kind of person who is done listening to new music. The kind of jaded dork who thinks they know all there is to know about punk music. That's too bad for them because I find a new record to get excited about nearly every week.

I vouch for every single one of these records. They all rule.

Most of us here at Razorcake would never steer you in the wrong direction when it comes to new music. We don't have the time or money to do that so I really do hope you trust our tastes and come away with a new found interest in at least one of these bands.

Razorcake Podcast #185

I'm currently watching the first season of The Walking Dead (stay with me), and the main character (Rick) has just reunited with his wife (Lori). He's explaining that he knew Lori was still alive because she'd taken photo albums from the house when she and their son escaped the zombie apocalypse.

In the event of a real life zombie apocalypse, I'm thinking my last minute grab-and-run type items would have to be music. In some form, anyway. Certainly some actual vinyl, but that shit gets heavy. Really, when it's late and there are undead leg-dragging assholes after my brain, I just want to listen to Crusades any way I can.

Logistics aside, this podcast represents my favorites of the zombie apocalypse contenders, the best of the stuff I absolutely couldn't live without. It is essentially a mix of recently reviewed music, stuff Todd's given me that I latched onto like a barnacle, and a few old favorites. They should keep you running plenty fast.

Stay safe out there!

Razorcake Podcast #184

I don't listen to much new music. It's not that I think newer music sucks, but I am generally content with hashing through old stuff. I'm constantly getting acquainted with bands I never took the time to listen to when I was growing up as well as lots of music that doesn't necessarily fit within the parameters of what Razorcake might cover. Nevertheless, I thought it would be fun to put together a podcast of songs from some of my favorite albums from 2011. But upon trying to do so I found out I didn't have enough material! So here are songs from some of my favorite releases from 2010 and 2011.

Razorcake Podcast #183

Since Todd and I goofed up just about everything on this particular podcast, I will list everything that we learned.

1. Evan Dorkin drew the cover of Radon's In Your Home 7" and, in fact, I have heard of him and was vaguely familiar with his work, particularly the Milk and Cheese characters, but have never read any of those comics, just seen them around.

2. Marie Prevost was a highly acclaimed early twentieth century actress who, after suffering a series of personal losses, drank herself to death all alone in her Hollywood apartment. Neighbors would eventually discover the body and that her pet dachshund, Maxie, had started to eat her.

C. Greg Norton was the other guy in Hüsker Dü besides Grant Hart and Bob Mould. Also it should be pointed out that despite his mustache he was not the gay member of Hüsker Dü.

6. To be "Between the Lions," apparently, refers to being in a library. I'm assuming one with lion statues out front, unless you're reading that Jumanji book, in which case the lions may only exist in the imaginings of a child!

8. I'm Bill Pinkel.

2a. “Hello and welcome to another Razorcake podcast” is the thing you say at the beginning of the podcast.

Hey y'all, my name is Marty Ploy. I have been doing DIY punk shows for over ten years (a majority of them in Southern California). I also am one of the curators of the über-stellar Awesome Fest in San Diego, every year.

If picking out songs for a podcast was a sport, consider me OJ Simpson, cause I'm killin' it!

I picked these bands cause I'm a huge fan of new bands and old favorites: everything from Hickey to The Slow Death to Sass Dragons to The Manix. Do yourself a favor and check this out!

Anyone who knows me is well aware of my love for making mixes. I love nothing more than getting hyped on a new record or a new band. These are some of the damies I been super bumpin' in my headphones as of late. Some senior citizens and some booster seats; all are worthy of sharing with y'all. Enjoy.

Razorcake Podcast #181

If you were to ask me what I think the most important date in current American mainstream culture is, I'd say it's December 25th. Entire industries bank their year's financial schedules around this silly, misconstrued holiday. I personally try to make as little a deal out of it as possible. Spend some time with family, maybe drink some good beer. But for the most part, I find the entire scene to be atrocious.

Now if you were to ask me what I think the most important weekend in DIY punk is, I'd tell you it's the last weekend of October, Gainesville city limits. An international convergence of punk, hardcore, folk, metal, and even some hip-hop. A celebration of music, friends, and family.

Over the last 10 years we've seen the Fest grow to what it is today. Built up over the years through hours of labor and thought, careful planning and taking risks.

There's nothing else like it in the entire country, so get the fuck out here, see some goddamn bands, and have a great time.

Happy Festing,

Daryl

Daryl

Razorcake Podcast #180

I've been reviewing records in two-month intervals since 1996 without a break. That's a lot of music, a lot of vinyl under the bridge. Perhaps the largest thing that's changed over the years is my expectation of music. At the DIY punk level, intention and purpose are becoming more and more important. If I know someone personally and they're a shitbag, it's almost impossible for me to get into their band.

It's more and more about context.

Why spend any part of my day celebrating another's assholeishness, right?

I'm also not saying that I encourage you to like shitty bands because they're nice people with right-on ideals. There are plenty of bands that would be better off being writers, journalists, or mime troupes. What I'm postulating is that there is a sweet spot within the spectrum: great bands that are playing for the right reasons. Battling personal demons for therapeutic benefit. Making punk a lifelong pursuit. Sharing and creating with their friends. Without expectation. Long-term rejection of the status quo.

These things are important to me because I want to celebrate when I listen to the music I love. I don't want to think of cars, insurance companies, or lawyers.

Here are songs I've come in contact with over the past two months and like quite a bit.

GOD EQUALS GENOCIDE / LIBYANS: Split: 7”EP

God Equals Genocide: What works for GEG is contrasts that balance. Sweet-but-unsatisfied. Snarly-but-uncomplainy. They play wonderfully dirty and sloppy yet their intentions couldn't be more clear, their conscience more clean. When they play live, Danny and Adrian hootenanny between guitar and drums, marking the middle of their set. On record, it happens within seconds! Who replaced the logo of the Bananas where the dove is supposed to be at the end of the bayonet on my Discharge record? Never Again! Libyans: Gnashing, beaks-a-pecking, smart-not-damning hardcore with flourishes that give hints that not only has Crass been a consideration and guiding hand, but so are Wire and the Wipers. Has a nice strangulated-yet-gallopy tension. Sorta like reaching really high on the top of a ladder for some high-hanging fruit and not fully retaining your balance while wearing a well-worn Bags T-shirt... as a band sound. Some of the strongest tracks ever from both bands. –Todd (Shock To The System / Dirt Cult)

ALOUATTA: DIY: 4-song 10”

Tightly-structured, loose cartography, expansive rock that ends in cabinets full of explosives and chipped dishes. An alouatta's a howler monkey. So was D. Boon. This Swedish record could fit right into Fishwife/Tanner/Night Marchers adjoining neighborhoods of San Diego, Sweden. Following the map legends (and guitar leads) finds us in a swampy yet clear place that's expansive, feral, and brightly lit. They know what they're doing and it sounds big and tight and wobbly enough so it's not tiny-precise but more embers-burning-a-hole-in-the-carpet, their-smell's-everywhere. Nicely done. –Todd (Sodertorn Record Company, skrammelrecords.com/sodertorn)

LEMURIA / CHEAP GIRLS: Split: 7”

Lemuria: The cute-o-meter is pegged, the needle blipping into outright preciousness at times. But instead of developing musical diabetes or knitting a sweater for a posi-hug take on the world, I believe in Lemuria's earnestness. And their two songs are catchy. Somewhere between The Unlovables, Defiance, OH, and Full Of Fancy? (My sweet-voiced, almost indie-pop collection isn't vast.) Cheap Girls: I lived in one apartment for five years. Shit carpet. Fibers everywhere. When I moved and removed the clock in the living room, where a pin on the back touched the wall, it formed this elegant, intricate shadow of dust on the wall. The Cheap Girls songs smoke and smolder and get into everything around them. Cumulative effect. They dissipate and cloud, slowly staining everything they touch. That's power and grace. Nice split. Good-surprised. –Todd (No Idea)

TRUE STEREO: Self-titled: 7”EP

Bless these punks. I fully admit of being in a certain mindframe growing up. It was a direct result of being unrelentingly bashed over the head with the radio canon of classic rock when working blue collar jobs and growing up in the rural high desert. I was in my early thirties before I circled back around and began to appreciate bands like Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, and The Sweet. I'm hypotheticalizing here, but I think True Stereo—although undeniably launching from the DIY punk space station—are steeped in a long, worthwhile rock tradition. They're on a completely different trajectory than Tucson's Lenguas Largas, but give thanks to both bands. They've separated the good rock music from the shit, then supercharged it and made it their own so you, dear listener, can witness the following: No, it hasn't all been done; No, DIY punk is not in a musical cul-de-sac or echo chamber; And no, the entire future doesn't belong to making songs to accompany a product as part of a “lifestyle campaign.” Really fuckin' good. –Todd (Dead Broke / Family Night)

SOMETHING FIERCE: Don't Be So Cruel: LP

Wham! meets all of the slower Clash songs from the middle of London Calling, on. Serious. And it's fuckin' great. That's all you really need to know, but for the band to understand I'm not clowning on them in the least, here goes: Rarely have I heard a band take the mellower, mid-tempo Clash as a starting point and embrace those slower-burning red-hot coals. (The Ratchets and Ringers being notable and worth-seeking-out exceptions.) Clash aping has typically been—in thoughtless hands—”punk ‘77! Charged hair! Spray-paint shit!” I love Clash ballads like “Lost in the Supermarket.” Here's where Wham! comes in. Instead of mixing the Clash with more traditional rock'n'roll (or even the psych rock Something Fierce alluded to in their debut LP), there's something prancy and Euro-pop in the delivery. Something very butt-missing in stone-washed jeans, gay-sex-in-public-bathrooms, and permanent-stubble that was a little off-putting when I first heard this new record with the echoes of There Are No Answers still ringing in my ears. But it's this airy, open, summery, and unexpected gayness that keeps Don't Be So Cruel spinning at high rotation at Razorcake HQ. Yeah, it's smart, the lyrics belie some real though, but it's also so prancing unicorn, so “Careless Whisper.” Shityeah. –Todd (Dirtnap)

JUNK, THE: Alright: 7”

The Junk make me think of rat bikes and choppers. Knowledgeable miscreants who take limited resources, cut off all the unnecessaries—all the gingerbread and fenders and guitar solos—to pure, quick-shifting, tire-spinning function. True rat bikes focus on the inward beauty and mechanical soundness, not bolt-on chrome or dentist-and-lawyer-approved paint jobs, not bright cartoons puffed up as motorcycles. The Junk are loud, running straight pipes, there's no back seat, and the only chrome-like substance is the fillings in their teeth, exposed as they point and laugh in joy as they tear ass down the freeway when the straights and squares are stuck in traffic. Pure punk played well, with a sense of swagger and fun. Is true OC punk peeking its head back up again? I hope so. –Todd (Hostage)

FUTURE VIRGINS: Western Problems: LP

Ever feel like crying, smiling, laughing, and yelling along at the same time to a band? That's what the Future Virgins do to me. It's sort of beautifully unnerving how many overlapping layers there are in their musical onion. When taken as a whole, as complete, it seems so simple, so natural. When looked at closely or unfurled: they're employing these closely interlocking veins; this complex fleshy forgiveness. When it's cut and examined, they emit a sweet, sharp, poetic juiciness. The Future Virgins have that intangible band magic that is as much human DNA, life experience, the alchemy of electrical currents going through musical instruments, long-range, beyond-”progressive” thinking, and the collective thought of a supportive region (Chattanooga). The thirteen-year-old, isolated me would hold this aloft like an amulet, wishing for it to take me to a better place. The thirty-nine-year-old me is glad that it's currently doing just that, that we're not just standing around, waiting for the past or for nostalgia to collapse over us like a concrete tidal wave. That there is a future dawning every morning and we're an integral part of it. The Future Virgins have made some of the best ramshackle-gold DIY punk in the past ten years, bar none. Fuck, man, I've still got a lump in my throat at how beautiful this record is. Definitely a top ten of 2011. –Todd (Plan-It-X South, planetxsouth@hotmail / Starcleaner, starcleaner.com / futurevirgins@yahoo.com)

SMOGTOWN: Dictoria: 7”EP

Few things are worse than a backseat driver punk. Guilty. Take one: Why the fuck weren't these two ragers on the last full-length, replacing the too-long sound bite and the acoustic closer? Take two: Hostage Records (after a six year hiatus!) brings out the best of Smogtown once again, on the heels of their first LP in too many years. Smogtown's strengths are nuclear-radiation, nuclear-power, and nuclear-suburban-decay. Some say that, for better or worse, California is the harbinger of the rest of the United States. (The foreclosure of the American dream, in particular.) Smogtown's your early disaster warning sirens. Smogtown's your prophecy that's coming true. Take heed. Take notes. Stock up on clean water. Ripping single. –Todd (Hostage)

Randomness rules our lives. And sometimes I like it to rule my music. The shuffle feature is something I rely upon a great deal with my music collection.
