DEAD KENNEDYS:
Mutiny on the Bay: LP
This is a live album that was recorded back when the Dead Kennedys were a real band and not the current Dead Kennedys Karaoke Fiasco that they’re pulling off now. The songs are taken from four SF-area live shows from 1982 and 1986. Most of the on-stage banner is cut out, and the sound quality is pretty good, so this album is sort of a DK Greatest Hits. It has live versions of “Too Drunk to Fuck,” “Holiday in Cambodia,” “California Über Alles,” “Moon over Marin,” “MTV – Get Off the Air,” and nine more of your favorite DK songs. It’s actually pretty good. I don’t know where you stand on the whole issue of the other three Dead Kennedys screwing Jello Biafra out of all the songs he wrote and suing him for money that they thought he should’ve made and re-releasing all the old DK albums on a label that claims to be “independent” but has a history of working with Warner Bros., Enigma, and BMG and released early stuff by Ted Nugent. But, if none of that bothers you, pick up this record.
–Sean Carswell (Manifesto)
